The Right-Foot-Only Figure 8 Challenge

November 24, 2021

The Right-Foot-Only Figure 8 Challenge

Here is a thirty-second test that tells you more about a player than a whole training session: how many figure 8 loops can they complete using only their right foot?

It is simple enough to do in a driveway, hard enough that nobody is good at it first time, and repeatable enough that progress is obvious week to week.

The challenge

Two cones, five yards apart. Thirty seconds on the clock. Complete as many full figure 8 loops as possible using only the right foot — inside and outside are both allowed, the left foot is not.

Then do it again with the left foot only. The gap between the two scores is the interesting number.

Loops in 30 seconds Where that puts them
Under 4Starting out — focus on control, not speed
4 to 6Solid foundation, ready to add pace
7 to 9Comfortable — start closing the gap between feet
10 or moreStrong. Shrink the cones to four yards and retest

Why single-foot matters

Almost every young player has a foot they hide. In open play it is easy to hide it — a body shape here, a shuffle there, and the weak foot barely touches the ball. A single-foot challenge removes the escape route.

The score gap is the honest measure. A player at nine on the right and three on the left does not have a dribbling problem; they have a left foot problem, and now they know it.

If the gap between feet is more than double, stop training the strong foot for two weeks. It will not go backwards, and the weak one will move fast.

How to improve the score

Retest weekly and write the number down. A visible score that moves is the single most reliable way to keep a young player doing something four times a week.

  • Smaller touches — most lost time is chasing a ball pushed too far
  • Turn tighter around the cone rather than arcing wide
  • Stay low through the turn, knees bent
  • Look at the next cone, not at the ball
  • Retest once a week, same cones, same distance

Train it, do not just read about it.
